Russia’s Attacks Leave All Major Thermal and Hydropower Plants in Ukraine Damaged

As a result of a series of massive missile and drone attacks by Russia, all major thermal and hydroelectric power plants in Ukraine have been damaged. Their ability to generate electricity has been significantly reduced, according to the Ukrainian Ministry of Energy on November 21.
Consumer demand for electricity remains at the same level as before the attacks, exacerbating the situation. As a result, all available capacities of domestic power plants are now solely dedicated to meeting domestic consumption, and electricity exports outside Ukraine have been temporarily suspended.

Energy companies are working actively to repair the damaged infrastructure, but due to ongoing attacks and technical difficulties, the recovery process is expected to take considerable time.
Meanwhile, Ukraine’s Khmelnytskyi and Rivne nuclear power plants have lowered their electricity output following damage to a vital electrical substation in a Russian airstrike.
The damaged substation plays a key role in Ukraine’s power grid, as it is responsible for converting and regulating voltage to ensure stable electricity transmission.

For nuclear plants, such infrastructure is critical to maintain the external power supply needed for essential safety and cooling systems.
Earlier, Ukraine's state nuclear operator Energoatom reported that the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant was disconnected from its primary external power source, once again jeopardizing the plant's safety.
At 16:18, the plant lost its connection to the Dniprovska transmission line, which is the main link to Ukraine’s unified energy grid. As a result, ZNPP is now relying on power from just one remaining external power line.
