Russia’s Novotroitsk Chromium Plant to Shut Down as EU Sanctions Cut Off Supplies

One of the largest enterprises in Russia’s Orenburg region, the Novotroitsk Plant of Chromium Compounds, is set to shut down on March 14 due to a halt in chrome ore supplies, The Moscow Times reported on March, citing a work meeting on the development of the Advanced Special Economic Zones in the Orenburg region, attended by regional prosecutor Ruslan Medvedev.
According to the news agency, Imports of this crucial material ceased following the introduction of new European sanctions. The Kazakh company that previously supplied the ore has refused to continue cooperation.
The plant’s general director, Vasily Izmalkin, noted that Europe banned the supply of chrome compounds and chrome ore to Russia in February.
“Everything has been prohibited. Starting Friday, we are shutting down the plant because there is no raw material,” he stated.
UNITED24 Media has previously released an article explaining the cruciality of chromium in producing Russian artillery that caused endless casualties among Ukrainians.

Izmalkin also noted that in 2025, the price of another key production component, sulfuric acid, spiked 2.5 times.
“We will soon be talking about unemployment. Where will these people go? We are facing a situation beyond our control. Industrial product prices are rising, and all of this is being done to push Chinese goods into our market,” he stated, as quoted by NoksTV.
On February 24, the European Union has adopted its 16th package of sanctions against Moscow, targeting key sectors of the Russian economy, including 53 entities accused of supplying Russia’s military-industrial complex.
The sanctions also expanded the list of restricted goods, including chemical precursors, software for CNC machines, chromium compounds, and UAV controllers.
