Serbia Cancels Russian Defense Contracts and Reaffirms Military Neutrality
Serbia has terminated several contracts with Russia’s defense industry due to its inability to deliver weapons. This was stated by the Chief of the Serbian Army General Staff, General Milan Mojsilović, in an interview with Serbian outlet Večernje Novosti.
“We have canceled some contracts and postponed others, hoping that the situation in international relations at the global level will normalize and allow these contracts to be fulfilled,” he told reporters.
Mojsilović noted that Serbia has managed to secure a system for supplying spare parts and maintaining military equipment despite the sanctions against Russia, as most of the equipment consists of Soviet-era weaponry. He stated that due to the widespread availability of Soviet and Russian-made weaponry globally, Serbia can continue maintaining and operating its existing arsenal.
At the same time, Mojsilović emphasized that Serbia firmly stands on the position of military neutrality.
“We are open to cooperation with partners both in the East and in the West, aware that this cooperation contributes to the preservation of stability and security in our region. I think there is an understanding of our position in the world,” Mojsilović said.
On January 10, the Biden administration unveiled its most extensive sanctions package to date, targeting Russia's energy sector, including oil and liquefied natural gas sectors.
