South Korea to Reassess Arms Support to Ukraine Amid New North Korea-Russia Pact

Authors

South Korea’s government stated it would review its position on arms shipments to Ukraine after North Korea and Russia signed an agreement for a “comprehensive strategic partnership”, which aims to strengthen mutual military and economic cooperation.

The National Security Adviser of South Korea Chang Ho-jin condemned the treaty signed between North Korea and Russia in a press briefing at the presidential office.

“We plan to reconsider the issue of arms support to Ukraine,” Chang said, implying a potential shift in South Korea’s policy of abstaining from supplying lethal aid to Ukraine.

The types of weapons that could be supplied to Ukraine will be kept a secret not to reveal plans in advance.

Chang also mentioned that South Korea will impose additional sanctions on four Russian ships, five organizations, and eight individuals engaged in the transfer of weapons and oil between Russia and North Korea.

The National Security Adviser added that South Korea is going to continue its security cooperation with the US and Japan to deter North Korea’s nuclear and missile threats.
