S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 was included in a category that recognizes games with a social, cultural, or educational impact beyond entertainment.

BAFTA announced this year’s nominees on March 12. The winners are due to be revealed on April 17 in London

For GSC Game World, the BAFTA nomination also carries symbolic weight. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 has become part of a broader cultural clash with Russia over Ukrainian identity in the game itself.

After the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion, the studio changed the subtitle from the Russian-style “Chernobyl” to the Ukrainian “Chornobyl,” while the game also dropped Russian voice acting, moves widely seen as an assertion of its Ukrainian identity.

The game's cultural impact has also drawn political attention from Russian officials.

Russia later designated GSC Game World an “undesirable” organization and accused S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 of promoting “Ukrainian narratives.”

Russia’s Prosecutor General’s Office designated Ukraine’s GSC Game World, the studio behind S.T.A.L.K.E.R., an “undesirable organization,”  effectively criminalizing cooperation with the company and tightening access to S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 inside Russia.

The move came after authorities accused the studio of supporting Ukraine and portraying Russia as an aggressor, prompting calls by officials and politicians to remove the game from Russian platforms.
