Nearly 200 Russian strikes were recorded in Ukraine’s Sumy region over a two-day period, despite Moscow’s announcement of a temporary ceasefire to coincide with Victory Day commemorations, according to regional authorities.

Sumy Regional Governor Oleh Hryhorov said in a statement on May 9 that the shelling on May 8 and 9 killed three civilians and injured seven more.

“There was no ‘ceasefire’ in Sumy region on May 8 and 9,” Hryhorov stated. “Russia continued its attacks throughout both days, launching nearly 200 strikes across multiple communities.”

Hryhorov listed the affected areas as Richkivska, Novoslobidska, Shostkynska, Bilopilska, Vorozhbyanska, Hlukhivska, Seredyno-Budska, Yunakivska, Sveska, and the village of Mykolaivska.

“My sincere condolences go to the families of the three civilians killed. And I wish a speedy recovery to the seven people who were injured,” he added.

Hryhorov reported that Russia used a variety of weapons during the assaults, including guided aerial bombs (KABs), Smerch multiple launch rocket systems, mortars, artillery, FPV drones, VOG-armed drones, unguided rockets, and missiles.

The attacks caused widespread destruction, damaging 39 private homes, a three-story residential building, two apartment blocks, a school, two businesses, two garages, four vehicles, a local store, and parts of the region’s power grid.

“Once again, Russia targets civilian infrastructure and peaceful communities, ignoring its own declared ceasefire,” Hryhorov said. “These were not military targets. These were homes, schools, and businesses.”

Earlier, it was reported that The US and its European allies are close to finalizing a proposal for a 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine, with coordinated sanctions on Russia to follow if Moscow rejects the offer.
