The Russian military has intensified its activity along the Zaporizhzhia axis and concentrated efforts near the Sumy border, according to a May report by Commander-in-Chief of Ukraine’s Armed Forces, Oleksandr Syrskyi.

"Defense forces continue to hold back the enemy, inflicting significant losses. Russian troops have focused their main efforts on the Pokrovsk, Toretsk, Lyman, and Novopavlivka directions, as well as in border areas of Sumy region," Syrskyi stated.

He noted a marked escalation on the Zaporizhzhia front, where Russian forces are conducting active offensive operations.

"We are also destroying the enemy and its military potential deep behind the front lines. In May alone, DeepStrike assets hit 58 targets on Russian territory, striking military sites and disrupting the aggressor’s defense industry. These included facilities involved in the production of explosives and strike drones."

Syrskyi confirmed that Ukraine's operation in the Kursk direction remains ongoing.

“The enemy is holding its best units here [in Kursk region]—forces originally intended for use in the east. Ukrainian defense forces are successfully inflicting significant losses and protecting the northern borders. At the same time, the enemy has an advantage in deploying fiber-optic drones, which significantly complicates efforts to counter them,” he said.

Previously, it was reported that Russia has gathered enough troops and equipment in the Kursk region to potentially launch an attack on Ukrainian territory, according to Andrii Demchenko, spokesperson for Ukraine’s State Border Guard Service, during a television broadcast on May 29.
