US President Donald Trump is reportedly considering sending Ukraine another Patriot air defense system to strengthen Kyiv’s defenses against ongoing Russian aerial attacks, according to sources cited by The Wall Street Journal on July 8.

One source said the White House has already instructed the Pentagon to explore the possibility of supplying another Patriot system along with additional weapons. Washington is also reviewing whether other countries could provide US-made air defense systems to Ukraine.

The United States has previously delivered three Patriot systems to Ukraine, with Germany contributing another three and a European consortium supplying one, according to a former Pentagon official cited by the WSJ. Each Patriot battery typically includes two to three launchers, a radar, and a command unit.

However, not all of Ukraine’s Patriot systems are currently operational due to maintenance challenges, the report notes. Another pressing issue is the limited availability of interceptor missiles used to destroy incoming aerial threats.

In late June, the Pentagon began reviewing its weapons stockpiles and temporarily paused some military aid to Ukraine, including a shipment of 30 Patriot interceptor missiles, as reported by Politico. After a phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Trump reportedly promised to immediately supply 10 interceptor missiles and help secure additional deliveries.

According to Axios, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz previously offered to finance additional Patriot systems for Ukraine if Trump agreed to their transfer. While no final deal was reached, discussions are ongoing.

Rob Lee, a senior fellow at the Foreign Policy Research Institute, told WSJ that strengthening Ukraine’s air defense is now a top priority, as Russia continues to produce large quantities of drones that are increasingly difficult to intercept.

Lee argued that providing Ukraine with more air defense systems would not only protect cities and industry but also enable Kyiv to continue domestic arms production and sustain its defense efforts.

Earlier, Trump addressed whether the US would send Patriot systems to Ukraine.
