US President Donald Trump has promised President Volodymyr Zelenskyy the immediate delivery of 10 Patriot air defense interceptors to strengthen Ukraine’s protection against ongoing Russian missile attacks.

The commitment was made during a recent call between the two leaders, according Axios, which cited its own sources on July 8.

While the number of missiles is smaller than what had previously been planned under a now-paused delivery, President Trump reportedly assured President Zelenskyy of his intent to help Ukraine secure additional supplies from alternative sources.

One day prior to the US-Ukraine conversation, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz reached out to President Trump with a proposal to unlock the delivery. He also suggested that Germany could purchase Patriot batteries from the US and transfer them to Ukraine.

President Trump, in turn, proposed that Germany provide one of its own Patriot systems, with the US and European allies sharing the associated costs. While no final agreement was reached, officials say discussions are ongoing.

According to the report, President Trump has reiterated that European partners should step up and provide their own air defense assets, rather than relying solely on US resources.

“Getting a Patriot missile isn't like going to Walmart and picking 10 off the shelf and going home,” one Trump advisor told Axios.

Recently, Russia has sharply escalated its assault on Ukraine. In one of the most intense and destructive attacks on Kyiv since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, waves of ballistic missiles and suicide drones rained down on the capital overnight, injuring at least 26 civilians and sparking widespread fires across the city.

Earlier, President Donald Trump approved a new shipment of US defensive weapons to Ukraine, signaling a shift in Washington’s posture just days after his call with Vladimir Putin and amid intensified Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities.
