President Donald Trump has greenlit a new shipment of US defensive weapons to Ukraine—marking a turn in Washington’s stance just days after a call with Vladimir Putin and escalating Russian strikes on Ukrainian cities.

The Pentagon has confirmed that President Donald Trump has ordered the deployment of additional defensive weapons to Ukraine, marking a sharp pivot following his recent high-profile phone call with Russian leader Vladimir Putin, the Pentagon reported on July 7.

“At President Trump’s direction, the Department of Defense is sending additional defensive weapons to Ukraine to ensure the Ukrainians can defend themselves while we work to secure a lasting peace and ensure the killing stops,” Chief Pentagon Spokesman Sean Parnell stated.

The statement emphasized that the president’s ongoing review of global military aid remains active and is “integral to our America First defense priorities.”

Trump publicly hinted at the new aid package earlier in the day during a joint press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House.

“We will be sending more weapons. We have to. They must be able to defend themselves,” Trump said, referring to Ukraine. “They’re taking very powerful hits. We’ll be forced to send more weapons. It’s mostly defensive, but the strikes are very brutal. Too many people are dying in that slaughter.”

The move follows increasing pressure on the administration after Ukrainian forces suffered mounting casualties from intensified Russian attacks across the front, particularly in the Kharkiv and Donetsk regions. Trump’s decision also comes just days after a contentious phone call with Vladimir Putin, which the US President later described as “disappointing.”

Separately, The Wall Street Journal’s Lara Seligman reported that Trump, in a private call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy last Friday, denied any role in a recent slowdown of US military shipments.

Citing sources familiar with the call, the Journal said Trump blamed a Pentagon audit of ammunition stockpiles—launched after US strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities last month—but insisted he had not ordered a freeze on aid to Kyiv.

Earlier, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte called on Alliance members to increase defense spending to 5% of GDP, citing Russia’s rapid militarization and the evolving global security landscape.
