Kremlin Shrugs Off Trump’s Disappointment, Says War in Ukraine Will Continue

The Kremlin has responded to US President Donald Trump’s remarks expressing disappointment with his latest phone call with Russian leader Vladimir Putin, insisting Moscow remains interested in a diplomatic resolution to the war in Ukraine—but sees no viable opportunity for that “at the moment,” said Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, as quoted by the Russian news agency Interfax on July 4.
“We pay very close attention to all of President Trump’s statements,” Peskov said.
According to Peskov, during the call, Putin reiterated Russia’s official position: that its goals in Ukraine remain unchanged, and that it would “prefer to achieve them through political and diplomatic means.”

However, Peskov added, “This does not seem possible at present, so we will continue our special military operation.”
Peskov also noted that Putin is waiting for Ukraine to agree to a date for a third round of direct peace negotiations—though he did not specify whether any formal talks are currently scheduled or even under preparation.
President Trump, speaking earlier from Joint Base Andrews, said he had made “no progress” in persuading Putin to end the war during what he described as a lengthy conversation covering multiple topics, including Iran and the situation in Ukraine.
