US President Donald Trump has pledged to Estonian President Alar Karis that the United States will continue its participation in negotiations between Ukraine and Russia, according to Estonian public broadcaster ERR on April 27.

During the funeral of Pope Francis in the Vatican, President Karis had the opportunity to speak with President Trump.

Karis stated that he inquired about the progress of peace efforts concerning Ukraine and asked Trump to ensure that the United States would maintain its role as a mediator in the ongoing negotiations.

“I asked him to do everything possible to keep the process going and to ensure that the US remains involved,” Karis said.

According to Karis, Trump assured him that the United States would not withdraw from the talks and noted that the parties were “quite close” to reaching a resolution following his recent meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Karis mentioned that he did not press Trump for further details regarding the outcome of that meeting.

The Estonian leader also noted that he extended an invitation for President Trump to visit Estonia, while Trump, in turn, invited Karis to Washington. Although both invitations were described as official, no specific dates have been agreed upon.

In addition to discussing Ukraine, Karis said they talked about transatlantic relations, emphasizing their importance from both European and American perspectives. Trump reportedly agreed on the need to strengthen these ties.

The interaction between Karis and Trump took place during the official mourning events for Pope Francis, where leaders from around the world gathered.

President Zelenskyy had also indicated that his meeting with Trump in the Vatican sent an important signal concerning Ukraine’s future negotiations and international support.

Earlier, US Vice President JD Vance stated that the United States may exit mediation efforts if Ukraine and Russia fail to reach an agreement, emphasizing the need for territorial compromises and a freeze in fighting.
