Vance: US May Exit Peace Talks if Ukraine and Russia Won’t Reach Any Agreement

US Vice President JD Vance stated that the United States is prepared to pull out of its mediation efforts between Russia and Ukraine if the current diplomatic initiative does not receive a constructive response, according to Bloomberg on April 23.
“It’s time for them [Russia and Ukraine] to either say yes or for the United States to walk away from this [mediation] process,” Vance told reporters in India on Wednesday.
The US presented a “very explicit proposal” to Russia and Ukraine, he added.
The current lines, somewhere close to them is where you’re ultimately, I think, going to draw the new lines in the conflict,” Vance said.
In addition, he stated that both Ukraine and Russia would need to give up some of the land they currently control.
“There’s going to have to be some territorial swaps,” Vance said, adding that both sides need to “put down their weapons, to freeze this thing and to get on with the business of actually building a better Russia and a better Ukraine.”
Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reiterated Ukraine’s position on the temporarily occupied territory of Crimea, rejecting reports that the country might accept territorial concessions as part of a potential peace agreement with Russia.
During a briefing with the press on April 22, Zelenskyy addressed reports from Bloomberg indicating that the United States may be prepared to recognize Russia’s control of Crimea as part of a broader peace agreement between Moscow and Kyiv.
According to sources familiar with the discussions, this potential concession reflects President Donald Trump’s eagerness to finalize a ceasefire deal.
