Russia has no interest in a genuine ceasefire in Ukraine and is merely stalling for time, according to the foreign ministers of the United Kingdom, France, and Germany, as reported by Reuters.
British Foreign Minister David Lammy said on April 4 during NATO meeting Putin “continues to obfuscate, continues to drag his feet.”
“He could accept a ceasefire now, he continues to bombard Ukraine, its civilian population, its energy supplies. We see you, Vladimir Putin, we know what you are doing,” Lammy said.
At the same time, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot stated that Russia “owes an answer to the United States” which had “worked very hard to come up with a mediation effort and a ceasefire proposal.”
German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said Putin’s calls for negotiations were “nothing but empty promises,” accusing him of stalling by constantly introducing new demands.
Foreign ministers from Canada and Estonia also urged the international community to set clear timelines for Russia to accept a ceasefire.
On April 4, meetings began between representatives of France, the United Kingdom, and Ukraine on the potential deployment of a military contingent.
