Russia Reportedly Open to “Some Security Guarantees” for Ukraine, Says Putin Envoy

Russia may be open to certain security guarantees for Ukraine, according to Kirill Dmitriev, CEO of the Russian Direct Investment Fund, who is currently in the United States. He said that the talks in Washington, where he was sent by Vladimir Putin, had yielded what he described as a “positive outcome.”
“Some security guarantees in some form may be acceptable,” Dmitriev said in an interview with Fox News. At the same time, he said that “Ukraine joining NATO, as our president [Putin] said, is not at all possible.”
Sources in London and Berlin told Politico they had heard of expectations for a new phone call between Trump and Putin, possibly later this week or early next week—though they noted that nothing has been finalized.
Meanwhile, sources within the White House told NBC that Trump’s close advisers have urged him not to call Putin until he agrees to a full ceasefire in Ukraine.
Dmitriev met on April 2 at the White House with Steve Witkoff, President Trump’s senior adviser on Russia negotiations, according to a US official in Washington familiar with the talks.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has consistently stressed that lasting peace is impossible without firm security guarantees for Kyiv.
In a statement delivered at the World Economic Forum in Davos on January 21, Zelenskyy emphasized the need for a significant peacekeeping force to safeguard Ukraine’s security and prevent a renewed Russian attack.
