UK May Join Germany in Buying US Weapons for Ukraine, Bloomberg Reports

Prime Minister Keir Starmer suggested the UK might join Germany in buying US weapons for Ukraine, as Western allies look for new ways to bolster Ukraine’s defenses against Russian aggression.
This was reported by Bloomberg on July 18, citing a source familiar with the discussions.

“We’re working with allies on the provision of capability” as well as “the backup that sits behind that to make sure any capability is effective in Ukraine,” Starmer said at a joint press conference with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, responding to a question about whether Britain would join US President Donald Trump’s plan to send Patriot missiles to Ukraine via sales to European partners.
Meanwhile, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has confirmed that Ukraine will receive Patriot air defense systems in the coming weeks, with defense ministries now finalizing the terms of the transfer.
“At this very hour, the ministries of defense are discussing the details of how we can ensure the delivery of Patriot systems to Ukraine in a short timeframe. This may take weeks. The talks are very specific, the American side is ready to move forward, but we do not yet have a final result,” Merz stated.
Earlier, it was reported that the US Department of Defense informed Switzerland that deliveries of Patriot air defense systems will be delayed, as priority is being given to Ukraine.
