UK Plans Key European Summit to Discuss Ukraine and Defense, Bloomberg Reports

The UK is considering hosting a meeting with European leaders to discuss Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine, according to Bloomberg on February 25.
This follows a week of shuttle diplomacy between Paris, Washington, and Kyiv. The meeting could take place as early as March 2.
It would serve as a follow-up to discussions held in Paris last week with French President Emmanuel Macron. However, sources warned that the plans remain provisional and could be altered. In addition, the meeting may be conducted virtually.
European leaders hope to persuade U.S. President Donald Trump against quickly negotiating a cease-fire with Russia, a move that many fear would embolden Moscow and weaken European security.
Macron met with Trump in Washington on Monday, and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer is scheduled to meet the U.S. president in Washington on Thursday.
Starmer’s office declined to comment on the proposed plans, Bloomberg reported.
Trump’s comments on February 24 suggested he was accelerating efforts to end the war without consulting European leaders or Ukraine, stating on social media that he was in “serious discussions” with Russian leader Vladimir Putin.
These remarks came after European leaders, including Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, visited Kyiv to mark the third anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The potential UK-hosted meeting would provide an opportunity for European leaders to assess their discussions with Trump and his officials and ensure a unified stance on the issue.
