UK Defence Secretary John Healey has warned that Russian leader Vladimir Putin’s “hidden hand” is likely assisting Iran in its conflict with the United States and Israel, Sky News reported on March 12.

Iranian-linked drones had targeted military installations housing British and American forces. Most recently, a drone barrage struck a coalition base in Erbil, northern Iraq, following an earlier attack on a Royal Air Force base in Cyprus during the second day of the war.

While British forces shot down two drones overnight in Erbil, several still impacted the camp. Healey confirmed there were no UK casualties, though some US personnel reportedly sustained minor injuries, Sky News wrote.

According to Healey, Iranian forces are currently employing attack patterns that bear the distinct “hallmarks” of Russian military operations in Ukraine. Following Tehran’s initial supply of thousands of Shahed suicide drones to Moscow, Russian forces heavily refined their deployment tactics.

Lieutenant General Nick Perry, the UK’s chief of joint operations, confirmed there is a “definitive” link between the two nations' militaries, noting that Iran has adopted the Russian tactic of flying drones at much lower altitudes to evade radar and maximize effectiveness.

According to Sky News, the UK defense chief pointed out that the Kremlin has a massive economic incentive to fuel the Middle East crisis. By sharing tactical expertise and potentially advanced capabilities with Tehran, Moscow directly profits from the resulting surge in global oil prices, which have spiked following Iran’s blockade of the vital Strait of Hormuz.

“The one world leader benefitting from the sky-high oil prices at the moment is Putin,” Healey told reporters at the UK’s Permanent Joint Headquarters in Northwood, adding that the Russian president is likely welcoming the conflict more than anyone else.

Meanwhile, British investigators are currently examining the components of the Iranian-linked drone that landed near a hangar at the RAF base in Cyprus. Healey stated that the military is working to determine if the device contained Russian-manufactured parts, promising to update the public on the findings, Sky News reported.

The UK Defence Secretary’s assessment aligns directly with emerging intelligence regarding the deepening military cooperation between Russia and Iran. Western intelligence officials have previously confirmed that Russia is actively teaching Iranian forces how to penetrate advanced air defense systems using operational tactics tested on the battlefield in Ukraine.

This intelligence sharing has reportedly expanded far beyond general targeting assistance, with Moscow now providing specific guidance on coordinating drone swarms, altering flight paths mid-mission, and flying at extremely low altitudes to evade radar detection.

As Iranian forces increasingly deploy these refined Shahed drone tactics to bypass air defenses in the Persian Gulf and strike US targets across the Middle East, European leaders are simultaneously warning that the Kremlin is exploiting the regional chaos.
