According to CNN on March 11, Western intelligence officials say Moscow has begun sharing operational experience gained during large-scale drone attacks against Ukraine. The information is reportedly being used by Iran to conduct strikes against US targets and countries in the Persian Gulf.

Iranian-designed Shahed drones—widely used by Russia during the war against Ukraine—recently managed to pass through air defense systems in several Gulf states with unexpected success.

A Western intelligence official told CNN that the level of cooperation appears to have expanded beyond previously understood intelligence support.

“What was once more general support is now causing greater concern, including drone targeting strategies that Russia used in Ukraine,” the official said.

According to CNN, intelligence sharing between Moscow and Tehran had previously been believed to focus mainly on general targeting assistance. However, Western officials now say Russia may be providing specific operational guidance based on its battlefield experience in Ukraine.

During the ongoing war against Ukraine, Russian forces have repeatedly launched Shahed drones in coordinated waves designed to overwhelm air defense systems. These attacks often involve multiple drones flying simultaneously and changing their flight paths during the mission in an effort to complicate interception.

Western intelligence officials cited by CNN believe similar tactics may now be used by Iranian forces during attacks targeting US interests and regional partners in the Middle East.

The reported cooperation comes amid escalating tensions in the region. Since February 28, the United States and Israel have been conducting a military operation against Iran known as Operation Epic Fury, while Iranian forces have responded with drone and missile attacks targeting several countries across the Middle East.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy previously warned that the growing confrontation in the region could become one of the most serious global security risks in recent years.

According to Zelenskyy, Ukrainian intelligence has also detected Russian-manufactured components in attack drones used by Iran during strikes on American military facilities in the region.
