Russia has openly declared support for Iran amid the escalating confrontation involving the United States and Israel, signaling that Moscow does not consider itself a neutral actor in the unfolding Middle East crisis.

According to Sky News on March 7, Russia’s ambassador to the United Kingdom, Andrei Kelin, said Moscow is siding with Tehran and criticized Western governments for what he described as an unfair interpretation of the conflict.

Kelin stated that Russia “is not neutral” in the situation and confirmed that Moscow supports Iran’s position.

“We are very negative about what is happening. Western countries now follow the logic that Iran is guilty of everything,” Kelin said in comments to Sky News. “But nobody says that the United States and Israel started the attack on Iran. And Iran is only responding to this attack. This is simply unfair.”

According to Sky News, the ambassador’s remarks represent one of the clearest public acknowledgments from Moscow that it is politically aligned with Tehran as tensions escalate in the region.

Kelin also said the priority should be an immediate cessation of hostilities and a return to diplomatic negotiations, arguing that the conflict should be resolved through political dialogue rather than military escalation.

The statements come as tensions in the Middle East remain high following recent military exchanges involving Iran, Israel, and the United States. Western governments have increasingly accused Tehran of destabilizing the region through missile programs and support for armed groups across the Middle East.

Russia and Iran have strengthened their strategic partnership in recent years. Since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Tehran has supplied Moscow with military equipment, including Shahed-type attack drones, according to Western governments and defense officials.

Earlier, on February 28, the United States and Israel carried out a series of coordinated strikes targeting Iranian military and nuclear-related facilities near Tehran and other locations across Iran. The operation triggered a sharp escalation in regional tensions, with Iranian officials warning of retaliation and accusing Washington and Tel Aviv of initiating a new phase of confrontation in the Middle East.
