The Ukrainian military has an advance of one to three kilometers in some directions of the frontline and is replenishing the exchange fund, said the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksandr Syrskyi on August 16 during a report to President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Syrskyi added that Major General Eduard Moskalov, who was appointed yesterday as the Head of the newly created military commandant's office in the Kursk region of the Russian Federation, has already begun to perform his duties. He reported that fighting was going on near Malaya Loknya village.

The statement came amid an ongoing Ukrainian incursion in Russia's Kursk region. On August 12, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy officially announced that Ukraine is carrying out an operation in Russia’s Kursk region.

Recent reports indicate that Ukraine is now in control of 82 settlements, covering 1,150 km² of Russian territory. Zelenskyy also mentioned that hundreds of Russian soldiers have surrendered to Ukrainian forces.
