Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry has condemned a new wave of politically motivated arrests in Belarus, denouncing the Lukashenko regime’s crackdown on citizens allegedly connected to the “Belaruski Hajun”  case as part of a broader campaign of repression.

“With regret, we note that in neighboring Belarus, anything can become grounds for being labeled a ‘traitor,’” the ministry stated on October 15.

Kyiv believes the mass arrests are aimed at creating an “exchange fund”—a pool of hostages that Lukashenko intends to trade for political concessions. “Such arbitrary detentions are meant to help Lukashenko buy indulgences in exchange for innocent people he throws into prison,” the statement continued.

The ministry emphasized that these actions constitute systematic and blatant violations of international human rights standards, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Helsinki Final Act.

Ukraine called on the international community to increase pressure on Lukashenko and his collaborators. It also reminded the world that since 2022, Belarus has been complicit in Russia’s war of aggression by providing its territory, airspace, and resources for the invasion of Ukraine.

“We believe that in the future, a democratic Belarus will cleanse itself of the crimes of the Lukashenko dictatorship, restore its independence and sovereignty after years of Russian domination, and return to the family of European nations to which it belongs historically, politically, and culturally,” the statement concluded.

Earlier, Ukraine’s Foreign Intelligence Chief, Oleg Ivashchenko, revealed new insights into Russia’s military intentions involving Belarus, as well as the impact of international sanctions limiting Moscow’s ability to sustain its war effort.
