Ukraine Cuts Diplomatic Ties With Nicaragua After Recognition of Crimea, Occupied Regions

Ukraine has severed diplomatic relations with Nicaragua after Managua recognized Crimea and parts of Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions as Russian territory, the Foreign Ministry announced on October 2.
In its statement, the ministry said it regards Nicaragua’s move as “an attempt to undermine the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, a gross violation of the UN Charter and the fundamental norms and principles of international law.”
The ministry added that recognition of the “subjectivity” of Russian occupation authorities in the four regions and Crimea “is null and void, will have no legal consequences and will not change the internationally recognized borders of Ukraine.”
Kyiv also cited Managua’s earlier decisions to recognize the so-called “DPR ”and “LPR and to open an “illegal ‘honorary consulate of Nicaragua’” in occupied Crimea as evidence of political alignment with Moscow.

Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said the break reflects a broader policy response: “Ukraine will continue to react as harshly as possible in response to any attempts to encroach on its sovereignty and territorial integrity. We will not tolerate any encroachments on our statehood and will take all necessary measures to protect our independence, security and the inviolability of our borders.”
Earlier, it was reported that Nicaragua’s President Daniel Ortega sent a letter to Vladimir Putin recognizing the occupied Ukrainian regions of Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia as part of Russia and expressing full support for Russia’s actions in Ukraine.
