Ukraine Deploys New “Barracuda” River Drone to Target Russia’s Frontline Waterways, Video

Ukrainian marines have developed and deployed a new unmanned surface vessel (USV) named Barracuda, designed for operations in river and littoral environments, according to reports and footage released by the 40th Separate Coastal Defense Brigade.

The drone was created by a dedicated unit also called “Barracuda,” which operates within the brigade under the 30th Marine Corps.

The Barracuda follows a modular design, allowing it to be equipped with different weapon systems depending on mission requirements.

According to the developers, the system incorporates “elements of artificial intelligence,” though no detailed specifications have been disclosed.

Unlike Ukraine’s long-range naval drones used in the Black Sea, the Barracuda is not equipped with satellite communications.

Its range is therefore limited, making it suitable primarily for short-distance missions among the islands of the Dnipro River, which corresponds with the operating area of the 40th Coastal Defense Brigade.

Video footage published by the brigade showed the drone being used with mounted single-shot grenade launchers and in the deployment of naval mines to block narrow channels between islands. Observers suggest the system may also serve a logistical function, transporting supplies to riverine positions.

Earlier, Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces unveiled the Alligator-9 naval drone—a modular platform capable of carrying laser weapons, torpedoes, or electronic warfare payloads, showcased in April alongside the Tryzub 90 laser system.
