The Ukrainian Navy has received a new fleet of unmanned maritime vessels, known as “drone carriers,” equipped with strike FPV (First-Person View) drones.

This modification, which enhances the strike capabilities of Ukraine’s naval drones, was publicly demonstrated on December 7, 2024, through a video shared by the Ukrainian Navy on Facebook.

The first public display of this upgraded system occurred during an attack on Russian-controlled gas platforms in the Black Sea. The Ukrainian Navy used not only traditional attack maritime drones but also integrated FPV drones launched from the drone carriers. These FPV drones are equipped with airburst systems, designed to target sensitive, “soft” targets such as radar and electronic warfare systems.

The footage also showed FPV drones engaging directly with Russian troops stationed on the platforms. This marks a significant advancement in the integration of unmanned systems, allowing Ukraine to carry out more precise and varied strikes against enemy positions.

The drone carriers, which had been modified to accommodate and deploy the FPV drones, display potential changes in the geometry of the vessel’s body. While the exact modifications are unclear from the video quality, it is likely that the drones are housed within the drone carrier and deployed through a hatch when needed.

Earlier in June 2024, Ukraine unveiled its latest maritime drone, the Stalker 5.0, at the Black Sea Security Forum in Odesa. Measuring 5 meters in length, this unmanned boat is designed for defense and supply missions, capable of delivering water, food, military equipment, and other cargo to coastal areas and islands. It also serves reconnaissance and patrolling purposes in sea and river border regions.
