Ukraine Developing Drones Built Around Standardized 82-mm and 120-mm Mortar Rounds

Ukrainian defense manufacturer Ukrainian Armor is developing FPV and fixed-wing type drones designed to deliver a standardized 82-mm and 120-mm rounds, according to Oboronka on January 21.
Oboronka said the company is testing an FPV munition based on an already-codified 82-mm mortar round using a 10-inch-frame carrier drone designed by its in-house bureau.
A basic complex is expected to include 250 drones, a ground control station, a relay antenna, and a plan to complete codification by the end of January.

The outlet added that Ukrainian Armor is also developing a heavier FPV munition built around a domestically produced 120-mm mortar round, and is working in parallel on an airplane-type FPV “wing” platform intended to carry mortar rounds of different calibers.
The push for factory-made mortar-round FPV munitions comes as Ukrainian units have often relied on improvised, unit-specific drone payloads, including grenades and grenade-launcher rounds adapted with 3D-printed parts.

Ukrainian forces typically use FPV racing drones turned into munitions by attaching warheads, typically RPG-7 or RKG-3, reflecting the widespread use of RPG-derived payloads that require different mounts and fuzing than mortar rounds.
Earlier, it was reported that Ukrainian Armor had developed FPV drones using modified mortar rounds as part of Ukrainian defense manufacturers’ displays at the UMEX 2026 unmanned systems exhibition, attracting international interest.
