Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that Ukraine expects to receive approximately three million artillery shells in 2025, with 1.8 million of them supplied through the “Czech initiative”, Zelenskyy stated during a joint press conference with Czech President Petr Pavel in Prague on May 4.

“Last year, you significantly, strongly helped us with artillery shells, and we are counting on this year’s cooperation to be just as productive,” Zelenskyy said.

“We discussed that this year 1.8 million shells may be delivered—this is a very powerful decision. Tomorrow, we have a meeting with Czech defense companies. We’re preparing for more specifics.”

Zelenskyy later clarified that the total expected amount of artillery ammunition could exceed the 1.8 million shells mentioned earlier.

“There is not only the ‘Czech initiative’—we are grateful for it—but the Russians should know that we are counting on three million artillery shells,” he said. “And it’s not only North Korea that will be helping them—we have allies helping Ukraine.”

Zelenskyy and First Lady Olena Zelenska arrived in Czechia on May 4 for an official visit with President Pavel. Discussions between Ukrainian officials and Czech defense industry leaders are expected to further detail the arms support strategy.

Earlier, Czechia delivered 400,000 large-caliber shells to Ukraine as part of the renewed “Czech Initiative.”
