A commemorative monument was unveiled in Donetsk on what would have been the 29th birthday of Dmytro “Da Vinci” Kotsiubailo, a Ukrainian Hero and commander of the “Da Vinci Wolves” 1st Separate Mechanized Battalion. The battalion’s press service reported the tribute on November 1, honoring Kotsiubailo’s legacy and contributions to Ukraine’s defense.

“Today, on ‘Da Vinci’s’ birthday, a memorial stele was ceremoniously unveiled in his honor here in Donetsk. The significance of placing this monument in this region is profound, as this is where Dmytro fought against the Russian aggressor from 2014 until his heroic death in 2023, defending Ukraine,” the battalion wrote.

Kotsiubailo, the first volunteer to be awarded the Hero of Ukraine title during his lifetime, has become a national symbol of courage and dedication.

His battalion added that “Da Vinci” embodies resilience and patriotism.

“The unveiling of this stele is a profound gesture of respect for his heroism. This site will stand as a reminder of the sacrifice and spirit of those who fight for a free Ukraine, honoring heroes who gave their lives for our shared freedom.”

“We, his comrades, carry on his legacy, striving for an Independent Ukrainian State!” the battalion concluded.

The memorial was created by Ukrainian artist Sasha Komyakhov, who also designed the “Da Vinci Wolves” battalion’s visual identity and the combat insignia that Kotsiubailo himself presented to his fighters.

Earlier, Czech President Petr Pavel awarded the Medal of Heroism to Karol Kucera, a young Czech volunteer who made the ultimate sacrifice while defending Ukraine against Russian aggression.
