What’s Behind Ukraine’s Secret Operation That Destroyed 250 Russian Artillery Systems in Two Nights

Ukraine developed a specialized munition designed to destroy artillery barrels from within and utilized it in a unique operation named “ArtAuchan” to destroy 250 Russian artillery pieces over two nights, Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov stated in an interview with PRESSING on June 17.
According to Fedorov, disabling heavy artillery using standard drone drops or conventional shells is highly difficult, as damaged units can frequently be repaired and returned to the front lines. To overcome this, Ukrainian developers engineered a specific munition that targets and ruptures the artillery barrels entirely, rendering the weapons unserviceable.

“A special shell was developed, and after just two nights, 250 units of Russian artillery were destroyed. There is video confirmation for each case,” Fedorov said.
The operation denotes a continuation of last year’s “Operation Auchan,” a massive three-day campaign where approximately 1,000 Ukrainian drones destroyed nearly 800 pieces of Russian armored vehicles. Fedorov stated that the success of the initial operation severely degraded Russian capabilities, preventing Moscow from launching large-scale armored assaults for six months.

The recent expansion into Operation ArtAuchan applies similar high-intensity drone tactics specifically to suppress Russia’s artillery networks.
During the same interview, Fedorov highlighted another major strategic effort, noting that Ukrainian drones are currently isolating temporarily Russian-occupied Crimea and could soon effectively turn the peninsula into an island.
“In essence, Crimea is being isolated by drones. And in the near future, it looks like Crimea will turn into an island,” Fedorov said, adding that this could lead to “very unexpected consequences” for Russian forces.
