Germany to Supply Ukraine With More AIM-9 and PAC-2 Missiles to Strengthen Air Defense

Germany will provide Ukraine with additional missiles for its air defense systems as Kyiv seeks to strengthen protection against Russian attacks ahead of winter, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius announced on September 8, according to Ukrinform correspondent.

Speaking at the opening of a meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group in the Ramstein format, Pistorius said Germany is expanding deliveries of AIM-9 air-to-air missiles from Bundeswehr stocks alongside previously announced PAC-2 interceptors.

“In addition to PAC-2 interceptor missiles, Germany will further increase the continuous supply of AIM-9 air-to-air missiles from Bundeswehr stocks to provide Ukraine with more of them. These missiles are being delivered right now and will strengthen Ukraine’s air defense before winter arrives,” Pistorius said.

The German defense minister recalled his decision at the NATO summit to urgently supply Ukraine with PAC-2 interceptors from Bundeswehr stocks, while calling on other members of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group to review their own inventories and consider similar contributions.

“From NATO’s perspective, further substantial deliveries of Patriot interceptor missiles by allies are acceptable,” Pistorius said.

Germany is also continuing regular deliveries of IRIS-T air defense systems and domestically produced guided missiles, Pistorius said, highlighting the effectiveness of the medium-range system in Ukraine.

Berlin’s support is expected to be complemented by additional Ukrainian orders for IRIS-T interceptors financed through the European Union’s defense loan for Ukraine.

“That is precisely why I am pleased that Ukraine intends to order several thousand additional IRIS-T guided missiles, which will be financed through the EU’s defense loan for Ukraine,” Pistorius said.

The additional German support comes as Ukraine works with its partners to expand its broader defenses against ballistic missile threats. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on September 8 that Kyiv is seeking US backing for its FREYJA anti-ballistic missile program while also working with European partners on the initiative.

“We are preparing our own FREYJA program. We very much hope that the Americans will support this program as well. But, nevertheless, with the Europeans we will definitely achieve the desired result,” Zelenskyy said.
