Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that Ukraine is ready to purchase ten Patriot air defense systems from the United States for $15 billion, with European partners prepared to help finance the deal.

Zelenskyy stated that in an interview with CBS, published on April 14.

“I respect the choice of the United States, but when the United States did not give us such systems [Patriot systems] or did not sell them, we are ready for any format, the question is not about money,” he said.

Zelensyy added that some European allies are ready to help financially with the purchase of these air defense systems.

“But the US says there is no possibility today. But at the same time, they are selling such systems, for example, to Israel. I’m not saying that Israel doesn’t need them, but if we are partners, can’t they find a way to protect Ukraine?” the Ukrainian president said.

Zelenskyy also pointed out that Ukraine has yet to receive the additional Patriot systems promised during the NATO summit in Washington.

On April 9, Zelenskyy said that Ukraine needs at least ten Patriot missile systems to defend against ongoing Russian ballistic missile attacks.

On the morning of April 13, 2025, Russian forces launched two ballistic missiles at the city center of Sumy, Ukraine. The strike occurred during Palm Sunday when the streets were filled with civilians. According to Ukrainian officials, the attack killed at least 34 people, including two children, and injured 117 others, among them 15 children.
