Ukraine Launches Largest 200 MW Energy Storage System to Boost Grid Stability

The largest private energy company in Ukraine DTEK has commissioned 200 MW of energy storage facilities built in partnership with US-based Fluence, a global leader in energy storage technology. This marks the launch of Ukraine’s largest energy storage system.

According to DTEK on September 11, six new facilities with capacities ranging from 20 to 50 MW have been connected to the grid in Kyiv and Dnipropetrovsk regions. Together, they can store 400 MWh of electricity—enough to power about 600,000 households for two hours. The systems will enhance energy security, reduce blackout risks, and help stabilize the grid amid ongoing Russian attacks.

Construction was completed in just six months—from March to August 2025—much faster than the standard timeline for such projects. Total investment reached $140 million.

“The National Renewable Energy Action Plan until 2030 clearly defines the need for such facilities. Thanks to Fluence’s technologies and DTEK’s proactive approach, we now have more security for Ukrainians and fewer risks of emergency outages,” Ukraine’s Minister of Energy, Svitlana Hrynchuk, emphasized.

DTEK CEO Maksym Timchenko called the project a “historic milestone” for the country’s energy system.

“We are integrating cutting-edge technologies to make Ukraine’s grid more reliable and resilient,” he added.

Fluence CEO Julian Nebreda highlighted the broader significance of the project:

“This achievement is a testament to resilience and to what can be accomplished through international cooperation. Together we are contributing to a stronger, more decentralized energy system that will ensure long-term stability for Ukraine.”

Earlier, DTEK and UK-based clean tech firm Octopus Energy Group unveiled RISE, a new initiative aimed at equipping Ukrainian businesses and public institutions with rooftop solar panels and battery storage systems.
