On March 19, world heavyweight boxing champion Oleksandr Usyk visited a damaged DTEK  thermal power plant to show support for Ukraine’s energy workers.

Since the start of the full-scale invasion, Ukraine’s energy sector has sustained significant damage. More than 2,300 missiles and drones have targeted critical infrastructure, with DTEK’s power plants hit over 200 times. Since the start of the invasion, DTEK has worked to restore power to over 14 million consumers in affected regions.

During his visit, Usyk met with workers who are working under difficult conditions to keep the power grid operational. Standing in the plant’s damaged control room, he put on his gloves and held a training session, symbolizing the resilience of Ukraine’s energy workers.

“It is remarkable to see the dedication of energy workers in restoring power after every attack. Their work is essential in keeping Ukraine’s energy system functioning,” Usyk said.

DTEK and Usyk have launched “The Fight for Light” campaign to raise awareness of the situation and encourage international support for Ukraine’s energy recovery efforts.

Previously, it was reported that in the early hours of March 15, Russian forces launched a large-scale attack on energy infrastructure in Ukraine’s Odesa and Dnipropetrovsk regions, causing significant damage and leaving parts of both regions without electricity.
