Ukraine Officially Terminates Air Agreement With Iran
Ukraine Terminates Air Agreement with Iran, Cabinet Representative Taras Melnychuk Announced in Parliament.
"The air service agreement between the government of Ukraine and the government of the Islamic Republic of Iran has been terminated," Melnychuk wrote, specifying that the agreement between the two countries was signed on July 9, 1993, in Tehran.
Flights from Ukraine to Iran had already been suspended in 2020 after a Ukraine International Airlines (UIA) plane was shot down by Iranian military forces shortly after takeoff from Tehran. The aircraft was struck by two missiles.
The air disaster claimed the lives of 167 passengers and 9 crew members, among the victims were Ukrainian citizens.
It wasn’t until the morning of January 11 that Iran, after days of denial, officially admitted responsibility for downing the Ukrainian plane with an anti-aircraft missile system, calling it an error and taking accountability.
