Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated that the United States is ignoring compelling evidence that Russia is actively helping Iran target US military bases in the Middle East, he said in an interview, highlighted by The Guardian on April 9.

Speaking on The Rest is Politics podcast with Alastair Campbell, Zelenskyy stated that Washington simply “trusts” Russian leader Vladimir Putin too much and revealed that Russian military satellites have been photographing critical energy infrastructure in the Gulf states and Israel, alongside the locations of American army bases across the region.

The Kremlin has reportedly been passing these detailed images to the Iranian regime to facilitate its military operations. “I said this publicly. Did we hear a reaction from the US to Russia that they have to stop it?” Zelenskyy asked. “The problem is they trust Putin. And it’s a pity.”

The Ukrainian president also directed sharp criticism at US President Donald Trump’s negotiating team, specifically Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, noting they have traveled to Moscow five times in the past year without ever making a trip to Kyiv. The Guardian wrote.

As the Trump administration pressures Ukraine to cede the eastern Donetsk and Luhansk region in exchange for a ceasefire, Zelenskyy warned that American officials fundamentally misunderstand Putin’s psychology. He stressed that handing over Donbas would not end the war, but merely invite Russian forces to advance on major regional capitals of Ukraine like cities of Dnipro and Kharkiv.

Addressing broader geopolitical shifts, Zelenskyy called US Vice President JD Vance’s recent trip to Budapest to campaign for Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán “not helpful.” With the US actively threatening to withdraw from NATO, Zelenskyy urged Europe to drastically maximize its independent military power, according to The Guardian.

To effectively deter Russian aggression, he proposed creating a massive new military bloc that combines the European Union with the armed forces of Ukraine, the UK, Turkey, and Norway.

Zelenskyy’s revelation about Russia aiding Iran exposes a dangerous contradiction in Washington’s current foreign policy. While the US administration pressures Ukraine to surrender territory and threatens to withdraw from NATO over European hesitation in the Middle East, Moscow is actively using its satellite capabilities to help Tehran target American bases.

This expanding Russia-Iran military nexus—combined with growing American diplomatic unreliability—perfectly illustrates why nations like Spain and Ukraine are now urgently calling for the creation of an independent, pan-European army capable of deterring the Kremlin without relying on the White House.
