Ukraine Ready for Full Ceasefire Starting Now, Zelenskyy Tells Trump in Phone Call

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and US President Donald Trump held a phone conversation on May 8, during which they discussed Europe’s victory over Nazism, welcomed the ratification of the US-Ukraine Economic Partnership Agreement, and addressed next steps toward peace.
“President Trump inquired about the situation on the battlefield, and I gave him a brief update. I also informed him that Ukraine is ready for a 30-day ceasefire—even starting today. We are waiting for Russia to agree to this proposal,” Zelenskyy wrote on his Telegram channel.
“I also confirmed that Ukraine is prepared for negotiations in any format. But for that to happen, Russia must demonstrate the seriousness of its intentions to end the war by beginning with a full and unconditional ceasefire,” he concluded.
A lasting and reliable ceasefire remains the clearest signal of genuine progress toward peace, Zelenskyy emphasized following the call, stating, “America can help make it happen. The world needs America just as it did 80 years ago.”
According to Zelenskyy, Trump expressed a willingness to help end the war and voiced support for a ceasefire. The two agreed to maintain further contact.
Earlier, Trump stated that Russia is not satisfied with the Ukrainian territories it has already seized during the war and seeks to take over the entire country.
When asked what Russia would have to give up as part of a peace agreement with Ukraine, Trump responded: “All of Ukraine.”
“No, no. Russia would have to give up all of Ukraine. Because what Russia wants is all of Ukraine. And if I didn’t get involved, they would be fighting right now for all of Ukraine. Russia doesn’t want the strip that they have now; Russia wants all of Ukraine,” Trump said.
