Ukraine Rescues 5 Children and a Persecuted Family From Russian Occupation
Ukraine has returned five Ukrainian children from the temporarily Russian-occupied territories, as reported by Andriy Yermak, Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine.
Among the children were three young Ukrainians who had just turned 18 years old, two children who had been living in the occupied territories for an extended period of time, where they were reportedly subjected to psychological pressure, and a young man who, in the absence of family support, had managed to leave Russian-occupied territory.
In addition, a 77-year-old woman unable to evacuate on her own and a family of four with children aged 11 and 14 was also brought over to Ukrainian-controlled territory. The family was subjected to persecution under Russian occupation because of their pro-Ukrainian position.
The children’s return was coordinated as part of the Bring Kids Back UA initiative, which was created by Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and aims at uniting the efforts of all Ukrainian government bodies, other countries, and international and non-governmental organizations to return all Ukrainian children deported and forcibly transferred by Russia.
Since the start of the full-scale war, over 20,000 Ukrainian children have reportedly been forcibly deported by Russia. A report from the Yale School of Public Health’s Humanitarian Research Lab has identified at least 314 cases where Ukrainian children were subjected to forced adoption and placement within Russian families.
