Ukraine Strikes Russian Airfield, Destroys Guided Bomb Depot and Aircraft
On the night of August 9, the Security Service of Ukraine, in cooperation with the Armed Forces and Special Operations Forces, struck the Russian military airfield "Lipetsk-2."
This airfield houses Su-34, Su-35, and MiG-31 aircraft, and there was a depot with 700 guided aerial bombs (KAB) used by the Russian army to bombard Ukraine.
According to the General Staff of Ukraine, during the attack, the munitions depots with 700 KABs and several other facilities near the airfield were hit. Multiple Russian sources reported fires, a significant blaze, and observed multiple detonations.
The results of the attack are still being clarified, but it is known that several dozen fighters and helicopters were based at the airfield—namely, Su-34, Su-35, and MiG-31 aircraft of the Russian Aerospace Forces. Most of the planes stationed at the airfield did not manage to take off, according to sources in the intelligence services.
Following the drone strike, a powerful explosion caused a chain reaction of detonations and a large-scale fire over a significant part of the airfield. Local authorities confirmed the detonations and announced the evacuation of residents from nearby settlements.
Ukrainian General Staff also reported an attack on Russian air defense systems in temporarily occupied Donetsk region.
“In addition, our units struck at the surface-to-air missile divisions of the Russian Federation in the temporarily occupied territory of Donetsk region. Specifically, the combat operations targeted three enemy radars: two from S-350 systems and one from S-300. The precise hit and destruction of one S-350 radar have been confirmed. Information about the other two targets is currently being verified. At the same time, the cessation of operations of all three enemy radars has been recorded following the strikes,” General Staff wrote.
Earlier, Governor of Russia’s Lipetsk region Igor Artemov reported a drone attack and damage to an energy infrastructure facility. The regional Emergency Ministry of Russia reported a fire at the military airfield in Lipetsk region.
