Explosion Rocks Ammunition Depot in Azerbaijan, Sparking Fire

An explosion followed by a fire occurred overnight at an ammunition depot near the village of Nizami in Azerbaijan’s Goranboy district, according to Report on September 2, citing a joint statement by the country’s Ministry of Emergency Situations, Ministry of Defense, and Ministry of Internal Affairs.

Emergency and defense personnel were deployed to the site immediately after the incident, working alongside the Interior Ministry and the Goranboy District Executive Authority to contain the situation.
Authorities said the situation was brought under control, while residents of nearby areas were evacuated as a precaution. The district executive authority reported that around 5,000 people were evacuated from the nearby villages of Nizami and Khoylu, while a checkpoint was established at the entrance to Nizami.

Earlier in the night, Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Emergency Situations said it had received preliminary reports of a fire near Nizami. Emergency crews, in coordination with other state agencies, were working to prevent the blaze from spreading and to extinguish it.
Authorities have not yet disclosed the cause of the explosion.
Seymur Nazarov, First Deputy Head of the Goranboy District Executive Authority, said that residential buildings had not been damaged in the ammunition depot fire.
The incident comes several weeks after a separate explosion and fire at an ammunition storage facility at a military plant in Bulgaria. On August 10, a fire broke out at the facility near the village of Belitsa in the municipality of Tryavna in central Bulgaria following a powerful explosion.
The blaze was subsequently brought under control, with no casualties or injuries reported. Tryavna Mayor Dencho Minev said all employees at the facility were evacuated by bus following the incident.
