Ukraine has officially condemned an Iranian drone strike targeting the Nakhchivan airport in Azerbaijan, calling Iran a global threat and describing the attack as a continuation of “reckless attacks on countries of the Middle East and Europe,” according to Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha on March 5.

The Foreign Minister pointed out that there is no justification for the actions of the Iranian regime. He noted that these actions affect multiple regions, including Ukraine, through the provision of drones for Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

"Iranian terrorists never had any grounds to harm Azerbaijan, Ukraine, by providing their drones to Russia or other countries, where they caused chaos, murder, and destabilization.

Iran's attack on Azerbaijan once again demonstrates that the regime in Tehran is a global threat, not a regional one. And it is not only about Iran, but also about its terrorist allies, including Russia," the minister said.

Sybiha called for a unified international response to address the risks posed by the current Iranian leadership. He emphasized the importance of neutralizing these threats to allow the Iranian people to live a normal life.

He also stated that international cooperation is necessary to restore security and stability both in the Middle East and globally.

On March 5, 2026, Iranian missiles and drones struck the territory of the Nakhchivan International Airport, an Azerbaijani exclave located near the border.  One drone reportedly struck the main terminal building of the airport, while another landed near a school in the village of Shekerabad.

The attack followed a period of heightened military readiness, as Azerbaijan had already begun moving specialized anti-drone units and air defense systems to the Iranian frontier days prior.

In response to the attack, Baku demanded an immediate clarification from Tehran and stated that Azerbaijan reserved the right to take retaliatory measures.

Earlier, it was reported that an Iranian barrage of missiles and drones hit the international airport in Nakhchivan, an Azerbaijani exclave, on March 5, 2026. The strike targeted a facility located approximately 10 kilometers from the Iranian border, resulting in two people being injured.
