Ukrainian Special Operations Forces carried out a strike against the Saratov Oil Refinery in Russia on September 16, according to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

The General Staff confirmed that the operation was conducted in coordination with other elements of Ukraine’s defense forces. “In the area of the facility, explosions and fire were recorded. The results of the strike are being clarified,” the statement read.

The Saratov refinery is one of Russia’s major oil-processing plants, producing gasoline, diesel fuel, fuel oil, various grades of bitumen, vacuum gas oil, and technical sulfur. In total, the facility manufactures more than 20 types of petroleum products.

In 2023, its processing volume reached 4.8 million tons. Ukrainian officials noted that the refinery is involved in supplying fuel to the Russian armed forces.

According to the General Staff, these strikes form part of broader measures aimed at reducing Russia’s military and economic potential, including its capacity to provide fuel, ammunition, and weapons to its troops.

Earlier, Ukrainian special forces reportedly sabotaged railway lines in Oryol and Leningrad regions on September 13–14, derailing fuel trains and disrupting key supply routes for Russian troops.
