Ukraine to Introduce New UAV Pilot Specialty for Bomb Detection and Aerial Reconnaissance

Ukraine is officially introducing a new specialty for UAV external pilots who will carry out tasks related to aerial reconnaissance and detection of explosive objects. The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine announced this development on March 19.
According to the ministry, the relevant standard was approved by Ukraine’s National Standards Body.
The document will come into effect on May 1, 2025. It sets out key principles and requirements for the use of mechanized demining equipment (MDE) in clearing territories of explosive devices.
In addition, the standard regulates the use of various types of MDEs—ranging from soil processing equipment to devices for detecting and neutralizing explosive objects. It also establishes requirements for MDE operators, including their training and certification, and sets safety measures for operating the equipment, including remote and autonomous control.
The standard also aligns the national regulatory framework with international standards, specifically the IMAS (International Mine Action Standards).

The development of the standard was carried out by specialists from the Main Directorate of Mine Action, Civil Protection, and Environmental Safety, along with other stakeholders in the demining field.
The Ministry of Defense reported that mechanized demining equipment will be tested at a specially designated polygon. This will allow the verification of the equipment under real conditions, enhancing its effectiveness.
This standard is an important step toward improving the effectiveness of humanitarian demining in Ukraine and implementing advanced global practices in combating the mine threat, according to the ministry.
In February, the Ministry of Defense announced the launch of a test site for evaluating new demining technologies, including the use of artificial intelligence. A location for the site has already been identified in collaboration with partners.
