Ukraine to Launch AI-Powered Testing Ground for Humanitarian Demining

The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense has initiated the creation of a testing ground for evaluating new demining technologies, including those powered by artificial intelligence (AI).
The ministry's press service announced the initiative on February 11, which was discussed during a working meeting involving experts from the Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of Economy, the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), and other organizations.
The project aims to enhance the effectiveness of humanitarian demining, test innovative solutions, and facilitate experience-sharing between Ukrainian and international partners.
Defense officials invited meeting participants to join the initiative led by the Main Directorate for Mine Action, Civil Protection, and Environmental Safety. According to the ministry, the designated testing site could serve as a “unique platform for joint research, trials, and training” for demining specialists.
Colonel Olha Drobot, a representative of the Mine Action Secretariat, emphasized that advanced technologies can significantly accelerate non-technical surveys of contaminated areas, thereby expediting the humanitarian demining process.
Additionally, new technologies are expected to improve the safety of deminers and reduce risks for civilians.
The discussion also covered new methods for analyzing satellite and aerial imagery to map mined areas, as well as the use of neural networks for automatic minefield detection. Participants explored ways to integrate modern AI algorithms into planning and safe demining operations.
Previously, a new demining machine, the MR-5100, was introduced at the Demine Ukraine forum, showcasing a domestic innovation aimed at accelerating mine clearance efforts across the country.
