Ukraine will establish an International Information and Innovation Training Hub on Humanitarian Demining aimed at strengthening public awareness of the risks posed by landmines and other explosive remnants of war.

The announcement was made by the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine during the forum “Specifics of Informing the Public About the Risks Associated with Mines and Other Explosive Ordnance” on June 24.

“The enemy is using modern munitions, including delivery systems capable of deploying cluster bombs, mines, and other lethal devices across the entire territory of Ukraine. That’s why we must focus our information efforts not only on de-occupied areas but across the entire country — from schoolchildren to government officials,” said Colonel Oleh Shuvarskyi, Head of the Mine Action Department.

The hub will serve as a central platform for implementing innovative approaches to mine risk education — from developing training programs to producing media content and interactive applications. It will also house an innovative museum of humanitarian demining.

The initiative will be based at the Humanitarian Demining Center under the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine.

According to the Ministry of Defense, more than 6 million civilians currently live in areas contaminated with explosive remnants of war. Since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion, 1,224 people have been injured or killed by mines and unexploded ordnance — 345 of them fatally. Over half of these incidents occurred in the Kharkiv, Mykolaiv, and Kherson regions.

Earlier, Ukraine had signed a $1.6 million agreement with the Government of Italy and the United Nations Development Programme to boost humanitarian demining efforts nationwide.

The funding will support initiatives aimed at clearing agricultural land, rebuilding critical infrastructure, reviving local economies in liberated areas, and facilitating the safe return of displaced communities.
