Ukraine to Provide US with Detailed List of Targets in Russia for Potential Long-Range Attacks
Ukraine has prepared a list of potential targets in Russia for possible strikes with American long-range weapons, which will be presented to President Joe Biden’s administration. Politico reported this, citing anonymous sources familiar with the matter.
According to the report, the list will be submitted by Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov and President’s Office Head Andriy Yermak during their visit to Washington. This move is seen as a last-ditch effort to persuade the US to lift restrictions on the use of American weapons for attacks on Russian targets.
While Ukraine has previously provided some information on potential targets in Russia, this new list is expected to be more detailed. Kyiv hopes that this step will influence Washington to reconsider its position, as the US has maintained for several months that lifting the restrictions would not have a significant strategic impact due to Russia relocating key assets, including aviation, far from the border.
US National Security Council and Pentagon officials declined to comment on Politico’s request. However, the official US policy allows Ukraine to carry out retaliatory strikes for defense against attacks from border regions, including Russia’s Kursk Oblast.
Previously, Andriy Yermak emphasized the need for permission to strike deeper into Russian territory with Western weapons, and Rustem Umerov has indicated preparations for “responses” to Russian attacks.
