Ukraine to Restore Diplomatic Relations With Syria if New Government Reverses Assad's Stance
Ukraine to restore diplomatic relations with Syria if the new government overturns the decision made by Bashar al-Assad's regime, which supported violations of Ukraine's territorial integrity.
This was stated by the spokesperson of Ukraine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Heorhii Tykhyi, during a briefing, as reported by Ukrinform on December 27.
"We will see how the new government acts. We understand that the previous Assad regime recognized the violation of Ukraine's territorial integrity, which is why diplomatic relations were severed. If this policy changes, diplomatic relations will be restored," Tykhyi said.
The spokesperson added that contact with the new Syrian government has already been established at the ministerial level.
Tykhyi emphasized that the delivery of 500 tons of wheat flour to Syria is not just a one-time initiative, but part of a broader policy, reflecting Ukraine's sincere desire to help the Syrian people in their difficult situation.
"We understand how difficult it is for ordinary Syrians after such a war and the fall of this brutal regime. So yes, this is part of a broader policy. I think you will see more steps in this direction in the future," the diplomat noted.
Tykhyi assured that if there is a mutual willingness to develop this dialogue, Kyiv will take further steps in this direction.
Earlier, on December 27, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine sent 500 tons of wheat flour to Syria as part of its ‘Grain From Ukraine’ humanitarian program.
