Ukraine’s Military Hackers Cripple Gazprom’s Digital Network in Coordinated Attack

Ukraine's military intelligence cyber unit has carried out a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack on the digital infrastructure of Russian energy companies Gazprom and Gazpromneft, according to New Voice of Ukraine, citing an anonymous source.
The attack took place on January 28, coinciding with the anniversary of the Battle of Kruty . It targeted online services used by enterprises that support the Russian military.
Gazprom is Russia’s state-owned energy company and the world's largest natural gas producer, significantly contributing to the country’s economy and energy exports. Gazpromneft, its oil subsidiary, manages exploration, production, refining, and sales, playing a major role in Russia’s energy sector.
As a result, Gazprom and Gazpromneft customers have been unable to access their personal accounts, use online services, pay for fuel with fuel cards, or debit and accumulate bonuses.
Gazprom representatives, responding to customer complaints, described the situation as a "Temporary technical failure" but did not provide details on the cause or a timeline for restoring services.
The special service linked the operation to historical resistance against Russian forces, stating: "Today the problems of Russian drivers are a greeting from our brothers from 1918, the heroes of the battle near Kruty, who over a hundred years ago gave a boost to the criminal Russian gangs of the drug addict Muraviov. Today we continue the work of the then defenders of Kyiv both on the front and in cyberspace. Glory to Ukraine!"
On August 17, Ukrainian military cyber experts, in coordination with the hacker group VO Team, disabled the Vega telecom provider in Russia’s Chelyabinsk region, cutting off internet and communication for a nuclear warhead developer.
