Russia Plans Large-Scale Cyberattack on the UK, Potentially Causing Blackouts, The Telegraph Reports
Russia is planning a series of large-scale cyberattacks targeting the United Kingdom, which could leave millions without power, British Minister for National Security and Government Threats Pat McFadden is expected to announce at a NATO conference on November 25, according to The Telegraph.
In his address, McFadden will outline Russia’s intent to execute a “destabilizing and debilitating” cyber offensive against the UK’s infrastructure and businesses. The potential attacks could disrupt the national power grid, causing widespread blackouts and dealing significant damage to the economy.
He is expected to describe Russia as “exceptionally aggressive and reckless in cyberspace,” with the goal of achieving “strategic advantage and humiliating nations supporting Ukraine.” Among the targeted sectors are media outlets, telecommunications, political and democratic institutions, and critical energy infrastructure.
According to McFadden, Russian military forces and affiliated cybercrime groups have intensified their activities, expanding their targets to include NATO members and partners.
He is expected to emphasize the increasing sophistication of attacks by “unofficial hacker groups,” which operate outside direct Kremlin control but are permitted to act freely as long as they align with Russia’s strategic objectives.
The UK government acknowledges that while it cannot entirely prevent cyberattacks, it has implemented robust measures to minimize their impact. McFadden’s statement is intended to reinforce the importance of preparedness within the UK’s critical infrastructure and business sectors.
