Ukraine’s Samp-T Missile Stocks May Run Out in Weeks Amid Delayed European Aid

Ukraine has urgently requested additional Aster-30 missiles for its Samp-T air defense systems from Italy and France as its existing stockpiles are nearly exhausted, according to a report by Corriere della Sera.
For several weeks, Ukrainian officials have been seeking at least 50 Aster-30 missiles from the two European nations. However, Italy’s missile reserves are reportedly nearing a critical threshold, limiting its ability to supply additional weapons. France, while possessing a larger stock, also faces constraints in providing further support.
On March 14, Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov met with his Italian counterpart, Guido Crosetto, in Rome. As part of his visit, Umerov also held discussions with executives from Eurosam, a joint venture of MBDA Italy, MBDA France, and Thales, which manufactures the Aster-30 missile system.
The Wall Street Journal previously reported that Samp-T systems have exhibited performance limitations compared to American-made Patriot batteries. Specifically, they have faced challenges in identifying and intercepting incoming Russian missiles during large-scale attacks.
Italy has already supplied Ukraine with two Samp-T batteries, retaining three for national defense. According to Corriere della Sera, the Italian government’s defense strategy, presented in November 2024, includes plans to procure ten additional Samp-T units, each valued at approximately €500 million.
Earlier, Yurii Ihnat, Head of the communications department of the Air Force Command, confirmed that a Russian Su-family warplane was shot down by Ukraine’s SAMP/T air defense system. He did not specify the exact model or location but stated that the interception was confirmed. Ihnat also noted that after several Russian aircraft were destroyed, Russian forces adjusted their tactics to target Ukrainian air defense systems, including the Patriot.
