Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces Launch Harpies, an All-Female Unit Specializing in Robotic Combat

Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Unit are recruiting for the newly established Harpies Women’s Unit which will focus on using unmanned and robotic systems, the The Unmanned Systems Forces of the Ukrainian Armed Forces announced on Telegram, April 2.
The Harpies, a community of women, will operate drones and robotic units, “The unit also involves men, but the role of pilots who deliver the final blow will be performed exclusively by women,” the statement says.

The unit is commanded by Daria, introduced in the statement, “The unit commander is Daria, alias ‘DSHK’. An active participant in the Revolution of Dignity, since 2022 she has performed combat missions as part of several special forces.”
In Ukraine, the Unmanned Systems Forces were established as a separate branch to oversee and operate the country’s drone fleet and other unmanned systems, which are integral to their defense strategy, especially in the ongoing war against Russia.
These units use drones for intelligence gathering, airstrikes, and other tactical operations, enhancing the military’s capabilities in modern warfare.

Prospective recruits will undergo 45 days of basic training, followed by more than 30 days of specialized professional training and team coordination before they begin combat operations.
The unit offers a wide range of drones, including FPV drones, heavy bombers, “wing” type strike UAVs, and ground robotic systems. Recruits will also receive competitive financial compensation and social benefits as per the current Ukrainian legislation.
In related news, Denmark will begin drafting women into its military next year as part of reforms aimed at strengthening its armed forces in response to growing security concerns, particularly from Russia.
